Drawn from the extensive holdings of the Museum of Fine Arts' Morse Collection of Japanese Pottery and from several private collections, this show will explore the rich tradition of ceramics, lacquerware, and bamboo that have been made for the preparation and drinking of tea (chanoyu) from the sixteenth century to the present day.
The newly redesigned Japanese gallery spotlights WAM’s very rare, first edition impressions of A Tour of Waterfalls in the Provinces (ca. 1833), a masterpiece woodblock-print series by the famous Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). Pioneering the theme of falling water, Hokusai made liberal use of the newly fashionable imported Prussian blue pigment and imbued the prints with atmospheric breadth and timeless intimacy through his faith in the purifying power of waterfalls. A permanent display of Japanese ceramics, ranging in date from 17th century to the 21st century, as well as the imposing early 10th century wooden sculpture of the Eleven-headed Kannon, will also be on view.

Taiko Drumming by Odaiko New England
Odaiko New England (ONE) began drumming in 1994 and is fast becoming one of the premier taiko groups on the East Coast. By combining Japanese aesthetic sensibility with the bold American spirit, ONE is forging its own modern distinctive style and voice as it challenges the very definition of the art of taiko.

Ken Matsuzaki was born in Tokyo in 1950 and received a degree in Ceramic Art from Tamagawa University School of Fine Arts, Tokyo. After graduating he moved to Mashiko in 1972 to apprentice with Tatsuzo Shimaoka (who himself had moved to Mashiko to study with Shoji Hamada). After a five year apprenticeship, Matsuzaki established his own kiln, Yuushin Gama, down the road from Mr. Shimaoka. Matsuzaki's works have a strong grounding in the Mingei philosophy though his approach is very contemporary, introducing a focus on the Oribe style with yohen, shino, and oribe glazing.
