    ARCHITECTURAL FRAGMENTS

From Travels to Japan, Italy, and India

    at the Lacoste Gallery

25 Main Street, Concord, MA 01742

    April 26 – May 24, 2014

Opening Reception: Saturday, April 26, from 3:00-5:00

Lacoste Gallery is pleased to present Jeff Shapiro: Architectural Fragments from Travels to Japan, Italy, and India, featuring sculptural forms that draw on the formal elements of diverse architecture. A renowned, international ceramic artist, Shapiro exhibits, travels, and teaches workshops worldwide. Architectural Fragments, his fourth solo exhibition at the Gallery, is a new body of work inspired by the artist’s travels abroad. From the fluted columns of ancient Rome to the temples, shrines, and altars of Pondicherry, Shapiro’s work transforms the architectural components he encounters in his travels around the world into abstract sculptures in clay, moving the medium beyond its utilitarian purposes. Paired with a selection of tea bowls and sake cups, Architectural Fragments, on view from April 26 to May 24, limns its Japanese, Italian, and Indian origins in ceramics.

People warn, “No one has ever returned from Cat Mountain!” But Sho, a young servant girl journeys to the strange and far-off mountain anyway where she hopes to find her freedom and her lost cat. Behind the Mask Theatre brings this magical folktale to life in an original adaptation featuring puppetry, dance, masks, and Japanese theater styles. After the performance, join the actors in the Peabody Museum for a mask-making workshop! Create masks with simple materials from designs based on traditional Japanese masks or characters in the play. Admission to the Harvard Museum of Natural History is included; explore the Africa and Asia galleries to find lions, tigers, and other members of the cat family.

Afterward, visit gallery 177 for the exhibition, "Fired Earth, Woven Bamboo: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics and Bamboo Art” to see more than 60 of the finest dramatic baskets and ceramics, including one by Morigami Jin.

Morigami Jin is one of the most artistically gifted of the younger generation of Japanese bamboo artists. Growing up with parents who were bamboo artisans, Mr. Morigami developed a deep respect and familiarity with the material. He has won numerous accolades for his work. His pieces are the first of a contemporary bamboo artist to be included in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Other examples of his bamboo sculptures can be found in the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.

Kenji Mizoguchi (1898-1958) was a foundational figure of the Japanese cinema and one of its uncontestably supreme artists. Mizoguchi remains best known today for his late masterworks of the 1950s and especially The Life of Oharu, Ugetsu and Sansho the Bailiff, haunting visions of feudal Japan tragically shaped by the suffering heroines and inexorable tracking shots often declared the pillars of Mizoguchi’s cinema. Exalted by Godard, Rivette, Rohmer, the slow unspooling of time and space in Mizoguchi’s late films was celebrated as a sublime realization of the stylized realism preached by the spiritual father of the nouvelle vague, André Bazin. With their obsessively detailed attention to period costume, architecture and the traditional Japanese arts and literature from which they drew deep inspiration, Mizoguchi’s late films also branded him, internationally, as the most quintessentially Japanese filmmaker, an epithet still active, although also extended these days to Yasujiro Ozu. While indisputably a pinnacle of Mizoguchi’s cinema, the late films offer, however, only a partial portrait of a filmmaker whose larger career was notably volatile and defined by a mercurial, even impulsive, imagination that frequently pulled him in contradictory directions.
