What does the sport of baseball mean to you? Visionary playwright/director Toshiki Okada (chelfitsch Theater Company) explores this iconic American symbol in his newest play God Bless Baseball.

Incorporating Okada’s distinctive style of hyper-colloquial speech and exaggerated commonplace gestures, the play positions the U.S. as parent and Japan and Korea– where baseball is deeply rooted in popular culture – as brothers heavily influenced by the parent. Featuring Japanese and Korean actors with a stage set by acclaimed visual/video artist Tadasu Takamine, this baseball culture triple-play is sure to be a home run.

Toshiki Okada's God Bless Baseball U.S. tour is supported by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, Government of Japan in the fiscal year 2015, Tokyo Metropolitan Government, The Japan Foundation through the Performing Arts JAPAN Program and the Asian Cultural Council.

In 2015, as America and Japan celebrated the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II, few remembered – if they ever knew – that twelve American prisoners-of-war were on the ground in Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and were killed by the atomic bomb that destroyed the city that day.

One of the Americans was Normand Brissette, a teen-age Navy flier from Lowell, Massachusetts; another was Sgt. Ralph Neal from Harrodsburg, Kentucky.

This powerful new film tells their story.

And the story of Shigeaki Mori, himself a Hiroshima survivor, who never knew the American bomb victims but who has devoted his life to finding their families and dedicating monuments to their memory.

BEND: a live performance by Kimi Maeda

    February 25, 2016, 7:00pm - 8:45pm

MIT, 2 Amherst Street, room E51-095,  Cambridge, MA

During World War II, over 110,000 Japanese Americans were taken from their homes by the United States Government. In this piece, the artist retells the story of her father and the artist Isamu Noguchi, both of whom were incarcerated in a camp in Poston, Arizona. Referencing the landscape of the camp’s desert, the artist uses sand to create live drawings inspired by these images while examining the effects of losing one’s home, one’s cultural identity, and one’s memory.

With the collaboration and support of the TOMODACHI Fund for Exchanges, U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, the Consulate General of Japan in Boston, and Keys of Change.

The Fukushima Youth Sinfonietta, an orchestra of students from ten Fukushima high-schools and middle-schools, has been invited to Boston for a week of music workshops and exchange programs with American youth orchestras, culminating in a major concert at Boston’s renowned Symphony Hall on April 3, 2016.

Established by Fukushima students in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake/tsunami/nuclear disasters of March 2011, this courageous ensemble of young musicians has been a vehicle of resilience and recovery for the people of Fukushima, and has inspired hope and optimism throughout Japan and the world.

The Boston visit by the FYS is presented by the Japan Society of Boston, with the cooperation of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Consulate General of Japan in Boston, will commemorate the fifth anniversary of the disasters of 2011.

This is a program of the U.S.-Japan “Tomodachi Initiative,” supported by the U.S.-Japan Council and the American Embassy in Tokyo.  The project is also supported by Keys of Change, the British non-profit organization that assisted in creating the FYS in 2011 and that has been mentoring it in the years since.

    Overview

Who: The Fukushima Youth Sinfonietta: more than fifty students from ten high schools in Fukushima, Japan

Who else: Musicians from Boston-area orchestras and schools.  Soloists include  Panos Karan (piano), Zach Tarpagos (flute), and Tetsuji Honna (conductor)

Repertoire: Barber: Adagio for Strings; Mozart: Flute Concerto in D major K314; Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor Op. 18; and other works.

What is significant about this project: This is a two-week project, with rehearsals and international music workshops in Fukushima and Boston, culminating in a concert in Boston’s Symphony Hall, one of the world’s most renowned music venues.  It is a very special opportunity for a group of young Japanese people who have suffered all the problems and dangers of Fukushima since the disasters of 2011 to show how music has been their lifeline, helping them to survive catastrophe, to recover through courage and determination, and ultimately to thrive. The Fukushima Youth Sinfonietta was established essentially by the students themselves, determined to overcome the challenges of their post-tsunami lives through the strength of music and communal activity.  Their leadership skills have already been demonstrated in impressive ways.  Using the unique transformative power of music, they have taken command of their lives and have led their communities in international initiatives that will no doubt bring ongoing benefit both to themselves and to their communities for many years to come.

The Fukushima Youth Sinfonietta has been a model of resilience, strengthening the communal resolve of their city, and inspiring other disaster victims throughout Japan and the world.  The experience of these young Japanese musicians will touch the hearts of American young people and wider audiences everywhere, and will demonstrate the power of music to heal and empower people in need.
