Sasakawa Peace Foundation USA (Sasakawa USA) is accepting applications for one summer intern (10-week program) in Washington, DC to support its “US-Japan NEXT Alliance Initiative,” working directly with our Senior Director, Jim Schoff.
Sasakawa USA is a non-partisan 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to deepening the understanding of and strengthening the relationship between the United States and Japan for the benefit of a free and open international community. Sasakawa USA’s “US-Japan NEXT Alliance Initiative” is a forum for bilateral dialogue, networking, and developing policy recommendations involving a wide range of subject matter experts (in and out of government) to stimulate new alliance connections across foreign, security, and technology policy areas.
Established by Sasakawa USA with support from the Nippon Foundation, the US-Japan NEXT Alliance Initiative’s goal is to help improve the alliance and how it serves shared interests, preparing it for emerging challenges within an increasingly complex and dynamic geostrategic environment. Launched in 2021, the Initiative includes two overlapping lines of effort: 1) Foreign & Security Policy, and 2) Technology & Innovation Connections.
The Initiative is led by Sr. Director Jim Schoff. Prior to joining Sasakawa USA to launch this Initiative, Schoff was a senior fellow and director of the Japan Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace for nine years, following two years as senior adviser for East Asia policy at the US Office of the Secretary of Defense. Schoff’s career spans over thirty years working in the fields of business, education, government, and the non-profit sector, all related to Japan, East Asia, and the US-Japan alliance.
The US-Japan NEXT Alliance Intern will work for and be supervised by Sr. Director Jim Schoff. Duties will include supporting various NEXT Alliance Initiative (and possibly other Sasakawa USA) programs such as assisting with event planning/logistics, drafting event recaps and writing for the Alliance Digest, conducting research, and administrative support. Our goal is to help the intern prepare for a foreign affairs-related career while contributing to our mission.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until February 14, 2025. Interviews are planned to be conducted during the weeks of February 17 and 24, with an offer expected by March 7.
The 10-week internship will start ideally from the beginning of June 2025 (e.g., from June 2 till August 8). The work will be conducted primarily in-person at Sasakawa USA’s office at 1819 L St NW, Washington, DC 20036. See https://spfusa.org/sasakawa-programs/u-s-japan-next-alliance-initiative/
