Introduction to Contemporary Japanese Printmakers with Allison Tolman

JSB members are invited to gather at Allison Tolman’s booth at the Affordable Air Fair Boston for a discussion about the established artists that the Tokyo-based gallery represents and for the opportunity to see the prints up close. 

Allison Tolman is a second-generation art dealer with long-standing ties to Japan and personal relationships since childhood. She oversees the Tolman Collection of Tokyo, established by her parents in 1972, which has grown to be the world’s largest publisher of contemporary Japanese graphic art. Allison Tolman will be offering prints from the Tolman Collection for sale at Boston’s Affordable Art Fair, featuring thousands of contemporary artworks priced between $100 and $12,000 from local, national, and international galleries.

Allison Tolman

Allison Tolman represents leading Japanese artists whose principal medium is paper.

A second-generation dealer of contemporary Japanese prints, Ms. Tolman was raised in Tokyo where she attended the Lycee Franco-Japonais. She returned to the United States for university studies, graduating from Yale College in 1981 with a BA in Japanese Economics.

Ms. Tolman is a private dealer in New York City and participates in various art fairs across the United States. She lectures frequently on contemporary Japanese prints and is actively involved in building private, corporate and museum collections of contemporary Japanese works on paper. She regularly appraises 20th and 21st century Japanese prints. She is a board member of the Print Club of New York and a board member of the Japanese Art Society of America where she currently serves as Treasurer.

Allison was most recently a member of the exhibition committee of the Japanese Art Society of America which organized Meiji Modern: Fifty Years of New Japan-a comprehensive exhibition of paintings, woodblock prints, cloisonne and textiles created during the Meiji Era (1868-1912) The exhibition features loans from more than 70 private and public collections, all in the United States. The exhibition opened in New York in October 2023, at the Asia Society Museum and travels to the Smart Museum at the University of Chicago and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. where it closes September 2024.

Her expertise in the field of 20th and 21st century Japanese works on paper has encouraged many collectors to ask advice on disbursing their collections, whether by donating to a museum or university, or offering artwork for sale.
