About the Event:

Join the Japan Society of Boston, Boston Shufukai Kendo, and Boston Kendo Kyokai for an introduction to Kendo, the way of the sword. This is the fourth installment in our BUDŌ Series, featuring traditional Japanese martial arts.

At the event, Kendo teachers Toshimi Yoshida, Kendo Kyoshi (elite teacher) 7th dan and David Harrison Kendo 5th dan, will introduce us to Kendo, highlighting its history as well as how the practice and matches are performed. They will talk about how Kendo has enabled them to focus on humility and self-development over the course of their lifetime. This is a great opportunity to learn about an incredibly popular yet uncommon budo in Japan, and to think through how certain practices can help us change and grow throughout our lives. We hope you will join us!

About Boston Shufukai Kendo:

Boston Shufukai Kendo (秀風会)was founded by Mr. Toshihiro Ogimura and his friends in Randolph, MA. Shufukai was named after the historical "Shunpukan(春風館)" Dojo established by Tesshu Yamaoka (山岡鉄舟)at the end of Edo period. The kanji "Shu(秀); excellence” was used instead of "Shun(春); spring", to add our own uniqueness to the club name, as represented in the logo. After Ogimura-sensei returned to Japan, the club became a non-profit organization with new leadership and has continued to expand the membership to include children and students. Since its founding, Shufukai has promoted Kendo in the greater Boston area, as well as in New York/New Jersey and Eastern Canada, by hosting Goyokai (五葉会) seminars and tournaments in collaboration with New York Shinbukan (神武館)and local dojos. The club has joined and hosted a number of local and national tournaments and seminars, led by senseis from the US and Japan. Shufukai is a member of the All Eastern United States Kendo Federation (AEUSKF), a division of the All United States Kendo Federation (AUSKF).

About Boston Kendo Kyokai:

Boston Kendo Kyokai, founded in 1980, is committed to promoting Kendo in Eastern Massachusetts by conducting regular kendo practice, holding demonstrations and exhibitions, sponsoring seminars and joint practices, participating in regional and national tournaments, and publicizing kendo on-line and through other media.

Kendo, the Way of the Sword, is the art of Japanese fencing. Kendo is one of the oldest and most celebrated of the Japanese martial arts and is held in high regard in Japan as an important cultural legacy.

Kendo and its companion art, Iaido, have transcended their bloody origins in Japan's feudal past to become modern martial disciplines that cultivate courtesy, humility, self-control, and fighting spirit, through mentally intense and physically rigorous training among practitioners.

Boston Kendo Kyokai is a member of the All United States Kendo Federation and the All Eastern United States Kendo Federation, and follows a curriculum recommended by the All Japan Kendo Federation.

Boston Kendo Kyokai is a 501(c)(3) non-profit cultural and charitable organization.
