BETWEEN THE LINES: A Monthly Discussion on Medieval Japanese Women's Literature

October 5, 2023 at 10:00:00 PM

About the Event:

A Monthly Discussion on Medieval Japanese Women's Literature

6:00 PM - 7:00 PM ET

Hosted online via Zoom

Our book for the next few sessions will be The Confessions of Lady Nijō (Towazugatari) as translated by Karen Brazell from the Kamakura period. This session will cover the introduction and part one.

Suggested questions to consider while reading:

1. Can we treat The Confessions of Lady Nijō like other Heian period works, despite being written in the Kamakura Period?

2. How does Lady Nijō pay tribute to her genre while also transforming it?

3. What reasons could there be for the lack of reception history?

4. How trustworthy is Lady Nijō as an author?

There are also three optional articles about the novel that are supplementary to our discussion. If you would like access to them, please email

The club is limited to Japan Society of Boston Members. Interested in joining but not yet a Member of the Japan Society of Boston? Consider becoming a member today!
