Hidehito Tonegawa - SVP & Head of Boston Branch, Mitsubishi Corporation (Americas)

Updated: Jun 11, 2023

How long have you been in Boston?

I started this new role in March 2023, so I am quite new here, although this is my third time living in the U.S. I was in the Washington, DC area from July 2003 to May 2005, and in Houston from October 2016 to September 2017.

What does your company do?

Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) is a global integrated business enterprise that develops and operates businesses together with its offices and subsidiaries worldwide, as well as with its global network of around 1,700 group companies. Our Boston branch is one of the offices under Mitsubishi Corporation (Americas).

MC has 10 Business Groups that operate across virtually every industry such as Natural Gas, Industrial Materials, and Consumer Industry. MC’s current activities have expanded far beyond its traditional trading operations to include project development, production and manufacturing operations, working in collaboration with our trusted partners around the globe.

Our function in Boston is to support business development for the MC Group by gathering and disseminating information related to the latest industry and tech trends, corporate practices, as well as social, political, and economic issues related to the local ecosystem.

What are the benefits and challenges of working in America?

There are many opportunities to engage with people from various backgrounds through meetings, conferences, and events in the US, especially here in Boston, and I find this type of networking to be very stimulating and eye-opening. During these past two months, my network has increased by more than 200 people. While this is exciting, I realize cultivating these relationships will take persistent effort, but I am up for the challenge.

What is your favorite thing about Boston?

I often go around MIT and Harvard for meetings and conferences, and I am enthralled by the sophisticated atmosphere. I just hope some of it rubs off on me!
