How long have you been a member of the Japan Society of Boston?
I have been a member since 2019.
What drew you to JSB?
I wanted to pursue my interest in Japanese culture locally.
How would you describe yourself and what are you passionate about?
Always looking for adventure, I have been fortunate to have had two careers, one in television and the other in historical letters and documents, and an adventure-prone husband and daughter. Thanks to my daughter Julia, who studied Japanese in high school and college, and taught in Japan, I have fallen in love with the country and its culture. We take every opportunity to travel there. I am especially passionate about my collection of Japanese pottery which has been growing over the last ten years. My focus is modern and contemporary works.
Do you have a favorite event or program that you have participated in with JSB?
My all time favorite program at JSB is Between the Lines with Christopher Ellars. We are reading Heian period women’s literature which is fascinating. Christopher brings these writers and this period, during which Tale of Genji was written, to life.
What about JSB sets it apart from other groups within the Boston area?
JSB is very active. There are many programs and activities, with new ones and special opportunities being added all the time. And in my experience, everyone is very friendly, and welcoming.
What would you say to somebody who is considering JSB?
What are you waiting for?
Thank you, Shirley, for sharing your Japan journey!
