12/5 Naoko’s Lyrics Workshop - “Japanese Song Lyrics Explained”

To kickstart JSB's week-long Fundraising Extravaganza, we are offering an hour-long class exploring the lyrics of a popular Japanese song. We'll be taking a close look at "Never Ending World" by the band Sekai no Owari, examining the meanings behind the song’s kanji characters as well as its poetic intent. If you like J-Pop, please join us online at 7PM (EST) on Monday, December 5th. The class will be held in English.

12/5 Lyrics Club

12/6 Chris’s Genji Talk - “What Does it Mean to Love?”

Ever since its release over one thousand years ago, The Tale of Genji has been widely regarded as the most popular and beautiful story to have been written in Japan. Murasaki Shikibu's work has inspired countless generations of critics, artists, actors, writers and more to revel in the emotional displays of love, romance, betrayal, lust, and hatred. Nowhere can we see the emotional appeal of The Tale of Genji celebrated more vividly than in the ever-popular Noh plays of Medieval Japan. Join the Japan Society online on Tuesday, December 6th at 7:00pm (EST) as we explore the world of Noh Theater and why it was so perfect for exploring the emotional complexity of Murasaki Shikibu's world!

12/6 Genji Tal

12/7 Emily’s Poetry Workshop - “Inside Contemporary Poetry”

Midweek, we’ll “dive in” to an interactive workshop on multimedia digital exhibitions of contemporary Japanese poetry. Get ready to let loose, read aloud, and consider how different sounds, shapes, colors, and performances interact with contemporary literary texts. Please join us online at 7pm EST on Wednesday, December 7th for this immersive adventure. This class will be held in English, with texts provided in both English and Japanese.

12/7 Poetry Workshop

12/8 My Japan Journey

How did you first become interested in Japan? How has that connection grown since you started your education or career? Join our community of bridge-builders at 7pm EST online on Thursday, December 8th for a group chat about how we develop and value the connection between Japan and the other place(s) we call home. This is a great chance to meet others who are interested in building personal and professional connections in Japan, and to gather ideas about how to stay in touch even when international travel is difficult. Feel free to bring your own stories and experiences to share!

12/8 My Japan Journey

12/9 Virtual Happy Hour

Grab a drink and settle in for the final night of our Fundraising Extravaganza! We’ll provide the recipe for an original cocktail using Japanese sake that you can make from the comfort of your own home. We hope you’ll join us to catch up with friends, celebrate the year’s successes, and raise a glass to all of you, whose support makes this all possible.
