Member Highlight: Koji Hellman

ree

Please introduce yourself.

My name is Koji Hellman (they/he), and I’m a Japanese-Swedish graphic designer and illustrator from Seattle, WA! I’m a junior studying graphic design at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, RI. My website is kojihellman.cargo.site and I’m @eepykeepy on Instagram!

What drew you to become a member of JSB?

I really wanted to become a part of a Japanese-American community in New England after moving here for college, so I decided to join JSB! It’s been really comforting being involved with something like JSB when I’m so far from my hometown.

What does it mean to you to have designed the logo for the Massachusetts Hokkaido Association?

As a Japanese designer, it means so much to me to design for the Massachusetts Hokkaido Association! I’m really honored to have a part in sustaining friendship and collaboration across continents and cultures.

How would you describe your design style? What inspires your designs?

I love to draw and make illustrations, so I’ve always thought of my designs as a form of drawing. I’m also very inspired by my culture and home(s), so I try to imbue my work with how I experience my identity. Designing makes me happy, so I hope my designs can also make others happy!

What would you say to somebody who is considering getting involved in the JSB community?

It’s a wonderful community! Do it!

Thank you, Koji, for sharing with us!
